Groq vs Fikra API: Technical Comparison

This document provides a technical breakdown of the architectural differences between Groq's LPU-based inference platform and Fikra API's distributed inference network. The comparison focuses on throughput guarantees, latency consistency, and regional payment infrastructure.

Core Architectural Differences

Feature Groq Fikra API
Hardware LPU (Language Processing Unit) H100/H200 GPU Cluster
Throughput Model Best-effort, shared pool Reserved, dedicated capacity
SLA Guarantee No public SLA 99.95% uptime SLA
Latency Consistency Variable under load Predictable, p99 < 200ms
Payment Methods Credit Card only Credit Card, M-Pesa, Airtel Money
Regional Focus Global (US-centric) Pan-African & Global

Reserved Throughput & SLAs

Groq operates on a shared inference pool. While initial tokens are fast, sustained high-concurrency workloads may experience queuing delays as the shared LPU resources are allocated across all users. There is no public Service Level Agreement (SLA) guaranteeing uptime or latency bounds.

Fikra API allocates reserved throughput to each API key. This means your inference requests are not competing for resources with other tenants. We guarantee a 99.95% uptime SLA and consistent p99 latency. If we fail to meet these metrics, you receive service credits automatically.

Ease of Migration

Migrating from Groq to Fikra requires only a change to the base_url and api_key. The request/response schema remains compatible with standard OpenAI-style endpoints.

import requests

# Groq Configuration
GROQ_BASE_URL = "https://api.groq.com/openai/v1"
GROQ_API_KEY = "gsk_your_groq_key"

# Fikra Configuration
FIKRA_BASE_URL = "https://api.fikra.ai/v1"
FIKRA_API_KEY = "fikra_your_key"

def generate_completion(base_url, api_key, prompt):
    headers = {
        "Authorization": f"Bearer {api_key}",
        "Content-Type": "application/json"
    }
    payload = {
        "model": "llama-3.1-70b",
        "messages": [{"role": "user", "content": prompt}],
        "max_tokens": 100
    }

    response = requests.post(f"{base_url}/chat/completions", headers=headers, json=payload)
    return response.json()

# Switching is a one-line change
# result = generate_completion(GROQ_BASE_URL, GROQ_API_KEY, "Hello")
result = generate_completion(FIKRA_BASE_URL, FIKRA_API_KEY, "Hello")

M-Pesa Support for African Developers

Groq requires a credit card for billing, which creates friction for developers in regions where card penetration is low. Fikra API integrates directly with M-Pesa and Airtel Money.

  • Instant Top-ups: Developers can top up their API credits via M-Pesa STK Push in under 30 seconds.
  • No Card Required: Full access to reserved throughput without international banking infrastructure.
  • Local Currency Billing: Invoices are generated in KES, UGX, TZS, and other local currencies, reducing FX volatility for teams.

This integration removes the primary barrier to entry for high-performance LLM inference in East and Southern Africa.
